Walking Tours - options and information

Perth - Perth city offers great walking tour options. Nicky will explore the general history of the town,  from medieval to Jacobite times showing Perth as the crowning place of kings and home to the Stone of Destiny.  We'll walk along the river Tay, see the grave of Effie Gray, stroll through the famous Inches, home of the Battle of the Clans, visit historic St John's Kirk, the Fair Maid's House and explore the links to Sir Walter Scott's famous novels.  Greyfriars Burial Ground highlights the pre-Reformation past, and graves illustrate the historic trades and industries of the city. For those with a sporting interest, Perth has made a significant contribution to the history and development of golf explained as we walk across the North Inch. Home of the famous Black Watch Regiment and Museum, the historic High Constables of Perth and the Guildry Incorporation, Perth has reams of historical interest.

Dunkeld & Birnam - Located on the border of Highland and Lowland Scotland, this historic and popular area has been pivotal in Scottish history even before the founding in 843 AD of what was to become Dunkeld Cathedral, which still stands today as part church, part ruin , surrounded by beautifully designed grounds and historic trees associated with 'the planting Dukes' of Atholl, the powerful Murray clan who had a key role in infliuencing the design of the town and the surrounding copuntryside often referred to as 'the cradle of the Scottish forest renaissance'. Just over the river in Birnam sits the mighty Birnam Oak, linked by legend to Shakespeare's play 'Macbeth'. Learn about why Shakespeare wrote a 'Scottish' play featuring some of the most famous witches in the English language. Hear also the story and locations associated with the writer Beatrix Potter and the local man who inspired her love of natural history; the famous fiddler Niel Gow and the noblewomen related to the Murray of Atholl family delving into the stories of Jacobite women, the many duchesses of Atholl as well as the impact this family had on the land and forests we see in this, Perthshire's own Big Tree Country.

William Soutar - this tour is based in Perth and features locations that this important Perth poet included in his poetry and writing. Willie Soutar died in 1943, at the age of 45, but he had a tremendous impact on the Scottish Literary Renaissance of the 20th century. He wrote in Braid Scots, and Nicky recites excerpts of poems and songs as well as describing his life in Perth. This tour can be adapted to include aspects of the historic Perth tour.

Bespoke - Nicky can meet you in your chosen Perthshire location and offer a guided walk - the Hermitage, Pitlochry, Aberfeldy, Scone and Blair Atholl are all places that offer fabulous walks and history.
